Its History
Arusha is seen as a major international diplomatic hub. It’s also known to be called “The Geneva of Africa” since it’s the de facto capital of the East African Community, hosting it as well. The city was the host of the International Criminal Tribunal of Rwanda since 1994.
Before gaining independence, Arusha experienced periods of conflict and colonization. In 1896, after the killing of two Christian missionaries, the German military forcefully occupied the area, using harsh tactics on the local population, including displacement and forced labor. During World War I, in 1916, the Germans were expelled, and many settlers and officials were deported. The British then took control of Arusha, marking the beginning of a new colonial administration. There are many attractions to visit and enjoy during a visit to Arusha.
